Plants vs. Zombies 2: It’s About Time – A Bigger, Bolder, and Wilder Sequel

Plants vs. Zombies 2: It’s About Time (PvZ2), released by PopCap Games in 2013, is the highly successful sequel to the original strategy classic. While the first game took place entirely in one neighborhood, PvZ2 explodes the formula with time travel, dozens of worlds, hundreds of plants, powerful zombies, and constant updates.

It remains one of the most content-rich and widely played mobile strategy games ever created.

A Time-Traveling Adventure

The story of PvZ2 begins when Crazy Dave decides he wants to re-eat his perfect taco. To do this, you travel through time using the talking RV Penny, visiting many different eras filled with unique zombies and environmental mechanics.

Main Worlds Include:

  • Ancient Egypt – sarcophagi zombies, tombstones, sandstorms.

  • Pirate Seas – planks, water gaps, and pirate imps.

  • Wild West – minecarts, shifting lanes.

  • Frostbite Caves – freezing tiles and heat-based plants.

  • Far Future – laser tiles and high-tech zombies.

  • Dark Ages – magical zombies, potions, and fairytale atmosphere.

  • Neon Mixtape Tour – musical waves that change zombie behavior.

  • Jurassic Marsh – dinos that push or help zombies.

  • Lost City – sun-producing tiles and ancient traps.

  • Modern Day – ultimate final battles with massive zombie mixes.

Every world introduces new rules, forcing players to rethink their strategies.

Huge Roster of Plants

PvZ2 greatly expands the plant lineup. The game features over 100 plants, including iconic originals and world-themed additions.

New strategic plant types:

  • Bonk Choy – fast melee attacker.

  • Snapdragon – fire-based cone damage.

  • Lightning Reed – chain lightning attacks.

  • Winter Melon – heavy splash slow.

  • Primal Peashooter – super knockback.

  • Magnifying Grass – uses sun to fire powerful shots.

  • Electric Peashooter, Gold Leaf, A.K.E.E., and more.

Plants can also be upgraded using Plant Food, a new mechanic that temporarily gives them a super ability.

Plant Food: Power-Up System

Plant Food is a glowing green boost dropped by glowing zombies.

When used, each plant performs a unique super attack:

  • Peashooter: Rapid-fire machine-gun peas.

  • Sunflower: Generates a burst of sun.

  • Cherry Bomb: Creates a massive explosion.

  • Walnut: Instantly repairs to full health.

This mechanic adds excitement, timing, and fast decision-making to the gameplay.

Zombies: Tougher, Smarter, and Weirder

Each world brings exotic zombies with unique abilities.

Examples:

  • Ra Zombie (Egypt) – steals sun.

  • Gargantuars – return even more powerful.

  • Punk Zombie (Neon Mixtape) – pushes zombies forward.

  • Shield Zombie (Far Future) – laser-resistant shields.

  • Pterodactyl Dinos (Jurassic) – lift zombies over defenses.

Zombies are funnier, fiercer, and more imaginative than ever.

Endless Modes and Challenges

PvZ2 adds many replayable game modes:

Piñata Parties – daily mini-levels with rewards.

Penny’s Pursuit – weekly rotating challenges and boss fights.

Arena Mode – compete with players globally for score.

Daily Adventure Levels – play older levels for rewards.

These modes keep the game fresh and always rewarding.

Epic Quests and Progression

The Epic Quests system allows players to complete themed missions to unlock plants or upgrade their power.

Plants can be leveled up using seed packets, making them:

  • attack faster

  • deal more damage

  • recharge quicker

  • gain extra durability

This RPG-like progression keeps players engaged long-term.

Boss Fights and Dr. Zomboss

Almost every world ends with a Dr. Zomboss boss battle, featuring:

  • giant mechs

  • special attacks

  • unique lane hazards

These are some of the most exciting encounters in the game.
